Jazz Icon Jason Marsalis Conducts Student Workshop at TSHS
On February 12, 2009, nationally recognized
jazz icon Jason Marsalis conducted a special workshop with the
Jazz Ensemble of the Leadership Conservatory
for the Arts at Tarpon Springs High School. Brother of jazz
greats Branford and Wynton Marsalis, Jason, known for his strong
percussion talent, recently released his 2008 album called "Music
Update".
Marsalis spent the afternoon with the Jazz
Ensemble reviewing the skills of timing, technique, and
rhythm. "He was great", said Emily Fredrickson, lead
trombonist in the ensemble. "We all learned a lot and it
was an honor to have him as our guest instructor; we hope he
comes back!"
Mr. Marsalis' visit was in preparation for
the Jazz Ensemble's appearance at the Swing
Central High School Jazz Band Competition & Workshop
at the 2009 Savannah Music Festival.
